Mar 29 - 4 April - Deciding on style, Moodboarding for clarity and the start of concept painting
Defining the story, Building the imagery
Mar 29 - 4 April
Overview
Story Changes
I was thinking about Paul's feedback on my proposal, about the fact the Colossi felt a bit like a gimmick. I started looking into ways to make the Giant Creatures a central focus of the story. After some quick moodboarding, I came across old whaling pictures. After a bit more thought and exploration I decided it might be an interesting route to go down and it would help give some context for the industrial revolution the main country in the story is going through.
I have also reduced the amount of main characters from 7 to 5, as I didn't feel like I could get all of them working with different personalities and functions within the story, without having a lot of overlap.
Moodboarding
I have been making a series of mood boards for the project. Some as an overview, some focused on locations and at least per main character. This wasn't to try sort out what the aspects in question might look like, but rather just to help me sort out my own thoughts. By getting them onto paper (so to speak) it helps get a concrete vision of my thoughts on the subject and lets me make critical analyses of the ideas.
For example, I think I'm a bit focused on the Gunslinger character on being a male western cowboy type of character. With retrospect, I should look at different ways I can portray the character and how the character works within the confines of the story.

Deciding Between 2D and 3D
After a LOT of thought, I have decided that the project should be aimed at making a 3D animated series pitch rather than a 2D one. I think I came to this decision after watching many different animated series online and thinking about where I would like to land. One of the big things holding me back was if my other ideas that I would like to take to pitch and production, would work in that style. After combing through concept art for the series I have been watching, I realized that it probably wouldn't be a problem transferring idea I thought up as 2D and making them as 3D. Besides, I can always slip into 2D with a little effort and good connections.
In addition, 2D portfolio work is a bit easier to squeeze in on the side.
